UPC addition errors and how to resolve them.

When you attempt to add a UPC in WERCSmart, certain errors may appear that must be resolved prior to proceeding with your registration:

UPCs being entered within WERCSmart must follow the criteria outlined below:

  • Your UPC must be between 12 and 14 digits long.

    • If your UPC is shorter than this, you may add zeros (0) to the beginning of your UPC.

  • You must include the check digit when you input your UPC.

    • If you are unsure of what the check digit should be for your UPC, please use this link to the GS1 Database: GS1 - Check Digit Calculator

    • On the GS1 website, you type in your UPC without the check digit and the site will calculate your check digit.

If you see an error message that says that your UPC already exists in the WERCSmart database, please take the following steps:

  • Navigate to your home screen and type your UPC into the box that says "UPC" to the right of the "More Filters" button.

    • Select the magnifying glass to search for the UPC within your account.

    • If you find the UPC is connected to a different product in your account, please remove the UPC from the other product.

    • For additional assistance with removing this UPC, please proceed to this article: How do I remove a UPC and/or a Retailer from my product?

  • If you are a manufacturer of the UPC and you believe that the UPC is being used by a distributor, please proceed to this article concerning distributor requests: How do I submit or accept a distributor request?

  • If you cannot find the UPC in your own account, and the distributor request does not apply to your company's situation, please contact Customer Support for assistance with having your UPC released in the system. You may contact Customer Support via phone call, chat, or by submitting a support ticket.

If you receive an error when adding your UPC that is different from those listed above, please contact Customer Support:
