Tips to avoid suspension due to an invalid Product Name

For WERCSmart

  • Use the same name you use when listing your product on your organization's website.
    • At a minimum, it should closely resemble the product's UPC names on websites and other searchable locations.
  • Allow for no confusion between two similar products.
    • Products with different formulations must be separated into separate submissions, with distinct names reflecting differences in the product range.
  • Model names are allowable only when accompanied by additional information about the product’s use or type.
    • A category name should not be used without mentioning the brand name, model, scent, or flavor.

For Retailers

Retailers that use WERCSmart Assessment Information have determined that they will not accept Assessment Information without a proper product name in their systems.

  • It must be specific enough for the Retailer's employees to find the product in their systems if the UPC is unavailable.
  • Allow for a Retailer to understand the product’s intended use or type based on the name alone.

Best practices when naming your product

Product Line or Brand

When using a product line to describe a range of products with similar formulations, it’s best to include the brand or product line name and an appropriate range descriptor. For example:

  • Nirvana Black Perfume
  • Acme 8000 BTU Air Conditioners
  • Paul Mitchell
  • Suave

You can customize the Product Line or Brand options by visiting My Account > My Library > Add.

Model Number or Name

When using a model number or name, including the product use or type as part of the product name will prevent suspension. For example;

  • MX-1000 - Computer Mouse
  • NV352 – Bagless Vacuum

Also, avoid using model numbers or names without additional information. Retailers will have an easier time finding your product on the shelf with a complete product name and model number or name where appropriate. For example:

  • MX-1000 - Computer Mouse
    • Instead of 'MX-1000'
  • NV352 – Bagless Vacuum
    • Instead of NV352

Generic Categories

When naming your product, it’s best to avoid restating the Product Type without additional information. For example:

  • Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black Perfume
    • Instead of 'Perfume'

Battery Containing Products

When managing many products in your catalog with different batteries, using the battery name or manufacturer in the product name can be helpful. For example;

  • Cory’s Toys – Samsung batteries
  • V-Series Sound Bar – Duracell batteries

When battery-containing products use the same battery across multiple devices, avoid using names like ‘battery-powered tools’ or ‘[battery name] containing tools.’

  • Stating the product or brand name with the intended use is more efficient for Retailers.

Products using different battery sizes, formulations, or manufacturers must be separated to ensure the proper data is sent to the Retailer relative to the battery. For example:

  • 18v Power Tools (Drill/Saw/LED)
    • Instead of 'Battery-powered tools'
  • Cory’s Toys – Samsung Lithium Ion batteries
    • Instead of ‘Samsung battery toys’
