New, or Improved, Functionality in WERCSmart®:

Pesticide Validation Improvements

When registering products, certain ingredients trigger a check to see if the product might be a registered pesticide. The UL Solutions team collaborated with customers, retailers and regulatory experts to review various product types in the following categories:

  • Health & Beauty
  • Over the Counter (OTC)

As a result, many products in these categories will experience fewer pesticide validation checks, making the registration process smoother with fewer interruptions and clicks.

However, some products, like antibacterial items, antifungals, sunscreens, and a few others, will still undergo validation.

Products that Need Recertification (Recertification in Advance)

Sometimes, an existing registration submitted for Hazard Review needs to be updated before any further action can be taken. This happens in the following situations:

  • The product manufacturer contacts support to put the registration data into Recertification.
  • New data collection points are added to WERCSmart for the product type, requiring additional data before future re-submissions.

Resubmissions might be needed when:

  • A UPC update is initiated.
  • The registration needs to be forwarded to a new or additional data recipient (retailer).

Historically, recertification has been seen as a major interruption, causing delays while trying to meet retailer deadlines.

To help with this, we're introducing Recertification in Advance. This feature will provide a preliminary list of products in your WERCSmart account that will need recertification if you choose to edit UPCs or forward the data. It allows you to prioritize updates and be aware of data revisions needed ahead of any deadline-driven actions.

When entering your WERCSmart account, you’ll see a new line item above the My Products list of your registrations:

When hovering over the “?” displayed, you will see a message outlining what registration data may be contained in the “Products that need recertification” area of WERCSmart.

When expanding this area, by clicking on the arrow (>), an additional table will appear. You may expand and collapse this area as needed. The My Products table will simply move down and is still accessible.

Product registrations listed in the Recertification table will also stay in the My Products table. The Recertification table is just a way to filter registrations that need updates before you can take further action, like editing UPCs or forwarding to additional data recipients (retailers).

For each item in the Recertification view, you can:

  • Edit the product data and resubmit, which will remove the product from the Recertification table.
  • View UPC data associated with the registration.
  • Learn More to get information on what needs to be updated in the registration to meet current requirements.

There's an export option specifically for products that need recertification. This gives you a basic Excel file to work from. The export doesn't include details on why each registration needs recertification, but it does provide a list of WERCSmart Product IDs and names. You can build upon this export file as needed.
