Data security is extremely important to consumers and companies in today’s world. Many companies have experienced a concern when it comes to data security. UL takes data security very seriously and that is a critical aspect of what we do daily when it comes to our WERCSmart® participates – manufacturers like you.  


WERCSmart is ISO 27001 certified, meaning that UL has invested in the people, processes, and technology to protect your organization’s data. And, that UL continues to be audited and monitored to ensure that UL complies with business, legal, contractual, and regulatory requirements required by ISO 27001 to provide you confidence and reinforcement that UL remains diligent about keeping your resources protected. 




Any registered WERCSmart manufacturer that registered a product is agreeing to providing Tier 1 Data Use – Regulatory Support to any entity that sells, transports, stores or disposed of the supplier’s product.  


There are a total of four permission-based tiers for product management in WERCSmart. They include: 


Tier 1 - Permission for regulatory results 

  • Supplier provides permission to use product data to assist recipients in complying with U.S. and international statues governing the sale, handling, transportation, storage and disposal of regulated products. 


Tier 2 - Permission for chemical program support 

  • Product manufacturer provides permission to use product data to screen chemical results and aggregate chemical usage reports for the presence and prevalence of specified chemicals. 

  • Share the chemical ID of publicly disclosed ingredient lists and transparency ratios of the chemical name and standard chemical number for public ingredients. 


Tier 3 - Permission for supplemental reports 

  • Supplier provides permission to use product data to assist recipients with sustainability evaluations, product qualification and rating programs, and supplier qualification and rating programs.  


Tier 4 - Permission for public disclosure 

  • Supplier provides permission to derive results from supplemental reports for qualification decisions or ratings that a product satisfies a set of criteria. 

  • Supplier provides permission to use public names on a product list for publishing on a recipient’s website 

  • Allow recipient to choose to publicly disclose any supplier provided (non-confidential) data from a product or supplier 



New product registrations are always defaulted to Tier 1 permission. Permissions beyond Tier 1 require that a retail contacts the manufacture and secure from the manufacturer-, retailers will need to reach out to the supplier directly and ask permission. 



The WERCSmart program provides a secure, permission-based platform that facilitates the safe exchange of product information between manufacturers and retailers with the highest standards of confidentiality and service.
