WERCSmart Product Name

The Product Name must be specific enough for Retailer's employees to find the product in their systems if the UPC is unavailable. Product Names on registrations in WERCSmart must closely resemble the product's UPC names on websites and other searchable locations.

Retailers that use WERCSmart Assessment information have determined that they will not accept Assessment information into their systems that do not have proper Product Name.

This is where your Product Name is entered within the registration:

Here is the WERCSmart Product Name policy:

The product name must allow for no confusion between two similar products and also allow for a WERCSmart recipient to understand the product’s intended use or type based on the name alone. Products with different formulations must be separated into separate submissions, with distinct names reflecting differences in the product range to assist the retailer. Model names are allowable only when accompanied by additional information about the product’s use or type. Similarly, use of a category name without reference to brand name, model, scent, or flavor should not be used. This is to avoid confusion by a WERCSmart retail recipient on other products.

How can you minimize having your product suspended for an invalid Product Name?

  • Use the same name you use when listing your product on your organization's website.

  • The name may be similar to the information you've provided within the Retailer's onboarding system.

Best Practices when naming your product:

When using a product line to describe a range of products with similar formulations – it’s best to include the brand name or product line name and an appropriate descriptor of the range. For example:

  • Example 1.  ‘Nirvana Black Perfume’

  • Example 2. ‘Acme 8000 BTU Air Conditioners'

When using a model number or name, including the product use or type as part of the product name, will prevent rejection for product names. For example;

  • Example 1. ‘MX-1000 - Computer Mouse’

  • Example 2. ‘NV352 – Bagless Vacuum’

When managing many products in your catalog with different batteries, using the battery name or manufacturer in the product name can be helpful. For example;

  • Example 1. ‘Cory’s Toys – Samsung batteries’

  • Example 2. ‘V-Series Sound Bar – Duracell batteries'

Try avoid using model numbers or names without additional information. A WERCSmart recipient will have an easier time finding your product on the shelf with a complete product name and model number or name where appropriate. For example:

  • Example 1. ‘MX-1000’

    • Instead, try using ‘MX-1000 – Computer Mouse’

  • Example 2. ‘NV352’

    • Instead, try using ‘NV-352 – Bagless Vacuum’

The use of generic product categories like ‘Perfume’ is a common product type, and when naming your product, it’s best to avoid restating the recommended use without additional information. For example:

  • Example 1. ‘Perfume’

    • Instead, try using ‘Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black Perfume’

Sometimes battery containing products use the same battery across multiple devices. When creating your registration for those products, avoid using names like ‘battery-powered tools’ or ‘[battery name] containing tools.’ Stating the product or brand name, with the intended use, is more efficient for a WERCSmart recipient. Also, products using different battery sizes, formulations, or manufacturers must be separated to ensure the proper data is being sent to the retail recipient relative to the battery. For example:

  • Example 1. ‘Battery-powered tools’

    • Instead, try using ‘18v Power Tools (Drill/Saw/LED)’

  • Example 2. ‘Samsung battery toys’

    • Instead, try using ‘Cory’s Toys – Samsung Lithium Ion batteries’
